When do we need heart and lung transplantations?
For us to be healthy, all organs in the body need to work normally. All organs in the body are interdependent. Even if one organ is effected, if it is not corrected, other organs will start failing and patient can die. When that organ is irreversibly damaged, sometimes it need to be replaced. That is how kidney transplantation is done when kidneys are damaged, liver transplantation is done when liver is damaged.
Similarly heart or lungs and sometimes both can get damaged due to some known and some unknown conditions. Initially drugs and sometimes surgeries like bypass and valve surgeries are tried. If they do not help and patient has worsening symptoms-breathing difficulty, low blood pressure, swelling of feet, need for repeated admissions, need for oxygen supplementation at rest, then we do some tests. After that if the doctor feels that patient is unlikely to live longer with the present treatment, then transplantation is advised. Depending on whether heart or lungs or both are affected, we need to change it to make patient live longer.
What is the survival rate for heart transplant patients?
After transplantation, patient’s symptoms improve and many of them have good quality of live with increased longevity. 10yrs survival after Heart Transplantation is around 75% and after Lung Transplantation is around 50%.
